Tibetan Wave Whip System

Quotes from conversation with Daniel Trout

Ron's motto for Tibetan Wave is “Let your inner child come out and play.”
When Tom wrote the book “The Filipino Fighting Whip,” Ron hadn't yet really fully developed Tibetan Wave to where it is today, (and how it continues to grow.)
…Tibetan Wave is VERY different to Latigo y Daga. LyD as developed by Guro Meadows is far more aggressive, (like the Filipino escrima styles it is based on.) It is a very “External” style. Prior to Master Lew's extensive study of Filipino Martial Arts under the late Supreme Grand Master Cacoy Canete, (founder of Cacoy Doce Pares Escrima, and Escrido,) Ron studied Kung Fu, and Tai Chi.
Those more “Internal” Martial Arts greatly influence Ron's Tibetan Wave style, but it is probably his years of study in the early 80s with Qi Gong Master Yu that inform his style of Tibetan Tai Chi and Tibetan Wave whip.
Additionally, the whip/knife combination that Guro Meadows developed with Latigo y Daga was based heavily on some of his early experiences sparring with members of the Dog Brothers. According to Ron, it was one of them that convinced him to train with a knife in the off hand.
Ron applied more of the philosophy that he learned from SGM Cacoy. In Cacoy Canete's philosophy was that the hand is the most powerful weapon you have, and while many Filipino styles utilize two sticks or a stick and some other weapon, Canete Doce Pares is uses very close-quarters ranges and teaches single stick and open hand where the empty hand is used in grappling, disarms and even Jiu-Jitsu-type joint locks.
Master Lew began with that philosophy in his approach to Filipino whip, so there was never a “Daga” in the style he was working with. But as the whip was working at such a speed at medium range, there was little for the offhand to do at close range.
That opened up the possibilities of manipulating the whip with the offhand. Master Lew began to apply the energy-flow and Chi-manipulation techniques from the Qi Gong and Tai Chi techniques he learned from Master Yu to the flow of the whip; using his left hand to intercept, manipulate and redirect the flow of kinetic energy rolling down the whip.
I find most of what does in practice to be a more internal training…It's more exploratory and playful, (in fact, Ron's motto for Tibetan Wave is “Let your inner child come out and play.”) but it does have very practical and obviously devastating application…
